Social Media And Me: An Average Day

Social Media is everywhere we turn, there’s no two-ways about it. When going through my day lately though, I’ve been aiming to focus on being intentional in everything I do. For instance, if I’m scrolling on Instagram, TikTok, or other social media sites, I am trying to stay on top of my usage. In my personal experience, too much social media consumption can make me anxious or even potentially trigger a depressive episode. In an effort to stay accountable, here’s an average day of social media use in my life.

Social Media In The Morning

Social media is often the first thing that my eyes see in the morning after I wake up. This is a habit I’m trying to break, as the dopamine may be there but that doesn’t mean it’s beneficial for my brain long-term. Studies have shown that humans can easily become addicted to that instant-gratification feeling, especially if you’re getting your “fix” first thing in the morning (Tasevski, 2021). Social media comes with bright colors, happy images, and a sense of community. While these aren’t inherently bad things, it’s important to stay on top of my scrolling as to not get addicted.

Social Media For Work

I’m currently in a profession where I use social media for work, but to me this is vastly different than how I use it personally. Social media is a fantastic tool for marketing, especially if done with consistency and high quality. The difference that I see personally between using Instagram, TikTok, and Email for work versus personal use is when I’m working, I’m inspired. I adore my job, and all of the clients that I get to work with, so building their brands and coming up with new marketing ideas holds a special place in my heart. Due to my profession, I also pay special close attention to marketing emails from companies that I like. These can provide me with inspiration, but I do find myself getting caught in the online web of sales and promo codes from time to time.

My Social Needs

I work from home full time, and while I’m extremely happy to do so, humans have social needs to interact. I find that Instagram helps me connect with my friends, clients, and family members in a way that’s not overly draining to me like Facebook was when I had an account. Instagram fulfills my need for social interaction mostly, but usually I also am able to chat with people using email for work and Snapchat for personal use. With all of these combined, I still find that getting out and seeing people in person really helps my mental state every once in a while.

Social Media And You

With today’s fast-paced world, social media usage has skyrocketed. Marketing has had to make new moves in the online world, and this includes learning how different social media platforms work. If you pay close attention, I bet you’ll start to recognize patterns in how you use social media every day! Taking care of yourself includes staying on top of your social media consumption, so be sure to be mindful this upcoming Holiday Season!
